(1) Diego Armando Maradona :- Born on 30th October 1960 to a bricklayer and lived in the slums of Villa Fiento in Argentina. He was known as Babe Ruth of Argentina Soccer. When Diego was just 6 years old his cousin gifted him a football and he was so enthralled that he slept with the ball beside him the whole night! He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1986 in Mexico as Captain and scored two goals in the quarter finals against England. One is said to be the ‘goal of the country’ and the other by the “hand of God”. Replays show that he pushed the ball in, from above his head, with his hand.
He was a member of the Argentina team in 4 World Cups from 1982 to 1994.
He won the Golden Boot award for the Best Player in the 1986 World Cup.
Maradona was home to many controversies. He was banned for 15 months for testing positive for drug use and spent time in rehab. Tax fraud followed that and all these issues resulted in him loosing his fitness.
Despite his ups and downs Diego Maradona is deeply loved and respected by the people of Argentina.
